Lancelot – Royer Champagne, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru
Happy National “Drink Wine Day” and Friday EVE!
I opened this bottle yesterday to taste and photograph it … and now I am actually sipping it as I write this review. It’s really just something you will want to drink – it’s simply delicious. I also want to say that I know many people think that when you open champagne you need to drink the bottle that day as the bubbles will disappear, but I am here to tell you – a champagne stopper will solve this and you can actually pour a glass throughout the week. It’s good for 3-4 days with a stopper to hold in the bubbles and carbonation!
This was featured in the champagne club last month! We have our entry level membership called the Fizz Connoisseur and this was our bottle selection for our members! It is 100% Grand Cru. What does Grand Cru mean? Mais Oui! But of course… so Grand Cru means essentially the highest quality terroir, vineyard, land-wise in which the grapes grow. It literally means “Great Growth.” There are strict classifications in France and so just know it equates to the best of the best and they award it based on the land…
100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from the famous Côte des Blancs.
What you discover with Lancelot-Royer Champagne is not only the purest expression of Chardonnay-based wine in the Côte des Blancs, but also a work of vinous art that has been meticulously guided from grape to glass. Winemaker Michel Chauvet is one of the last artisans who chooses to craft his champagne exclusively by hand, the way it was made in the early 1900s before machines replaced manual labor. Lancelot-Royer is certainly one of the smallest domaines in Champagne, yet this is a boon for a craftsman as dedicated to quality as is Chauvet. Each bottle is uncompromisingly faithful to the lemony delicacy that characterizes Cramant and the crystalline purity of the finest blanc de blancs wines.
Hand-harvested. Pressed by hand in an upright, wooden press; fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. Aged for four years in bottle. Riddled by hand. Approximately 30% reserve wine. No added dosage!
PAIRING NOTES
In tasting this champagne you will find aromas of dried flowers, green apple, yellow pear with hints of lemon and lemon zest, apple, and stone fruits! Very refined and high quality. This would be fabulous with any fresh seafood, smoked salmon or chicken in cream sauce.
